Well, Bret and I knew this day would come... The day our little boy would start to ask for certain independent tasks - no, not to start shaving or to take the car out on Friday night (but at this rate- that is right around the corner!) Jackson has been asking us for awhile now if he could ride the bus to school. There is a stop one block down the street and several of the neighborhood kids gather at the stop sign and "eagerly" await the yellow limo to Elbert Elementary! Well, Jackson has always been driven to school chauffeured by his dad or myself - always noticing the kids out the car window. As Jackson's 8th birthday approaches he once again asked it he could join the other kids for this childhood right of passage. We agreed. Now, Bret and I are not what I would consider overprotective parents but for some reason there is something about sending your child down the street - with little to no supervision - to get to school. But Jackson is such a great kid and this was important to him, so after finding out that "no, Mrs. Morris , there are no forms or notarized documents that need to be filled out in triplicate" for your son to catch the bus to school. We sent Jackson off on Tuesday to ride the bus for the first time. I have to admit that I walked with him to the bus stop on Tuesday (by the way, I am never "allowed" to do that again) and made sure that Jackson and I both properly introduced ourselves to the bus driver... yes, Jackson was completely mortified and as I was
happily-chatting to her, the bus driver quickly closed the bus door - and like the scene from Forest Gump - she was gone. So there I stood in my wrap dress and red heels as my first born son rode off to a more independent childhood. Wow, I cannot even tell you how quickly time flies - I guess we are all having fun!
I snapped this picture of Jackson as he walked down the sidewalk to the bus stop - This was all I was able to capture - as the risk of embarrassing him.
